From the desk of Lou Engle:

Friends,

Recently, I sent out an urgent call to prayer concerning the healthcare bill. I received some constructive feedback challenging me to look at the situation of the poor and those who cannot afford healthcare. I want to clarify that I believe there must healthcare reform. As believers, we need to identify deeply with the agonizing injustice that the poor, and those dealing with overwhelming medical situations face everyday as they encounter the exorbitant cost of healthcare in it's present form.

The Funding of Abortion

We must pray for our leaders that God would give them wisdom to handle the complexities of healthcare in a compassionate and just way. However, the main premise of my appeal was that we cannot allow a healthcare system that helps the poor yet allows for systemic abortion to be mainstreamed in society. President Obama recently declared on a phone call to christian leaders across the nation that federally funded abortion is not in this healthcare bill, but that is not true. Seven amendments were put forward in the Senate and the House that would not permit tax payer funded abortions in the healthcare plan. All of them were rejected. All the President needs to do to confirm his word is to declare that he will veto every healthcare plan that includes the funding of abortion. I would not expect that to happen because the funding of abortion is part and parcel of the whole agenda.

It's Time

As believers, we must insist on compassion for the poor without compromising the moral absolutes of the sacredness of life from conception to death. I will be sending out a statement on this issue once again before the September 8th reconvening of our government leaders in D.C. It's a time to pray and it's a time to raise our voices.
